The centre launched the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to upgrade railway stations across India with better facilities. These include improved station access, waiting halls, toilets, lifts, escalators, free Wi-Fi, kiosks, passenger lounges, and business meeting spaces.
Kurnool City Railway Station has a long history, dating back to 1806. Earlier named as Kurnool Town Railway Station, it acquired its present title in 2013–14 when current Dhone legislator Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy had been the union minister of state for railways. Some modernisation works had been carried out in 2018 at a cost of ₹28 crore.
The Kurnool City Railway Station remodelling project includes a second main entrance at Venkataramana Colony, a new booking counter, complete renovation of the existing east-side entrance, a foot overbridge connecting both entrances, and the installation of lifts and escalators for passenger convenience.
When contacted, a senior railway official said that they plan to complete the works within the next 3–4 months at any cost. “The contracting agency has been instructed to speed up the process. We hope to achieve our target within 3–4 months,” he reiterated.
