Swapping of Newborns Sparks Chaos at Visakhapatnam Hospital

Visakhapatnam: Commotion erupted within the maternity ward of the King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam following a mix-up in handing over babies to the wrong mothers.

Supervising medical officer Dr. P. Sivananda personally intervened and calmed the tensions between the two parties.

According to information, a woman from Parawada in Anakapalle district and another from Krishna district arrived at the labour room around 8:30 a.m. Both women were assigned separate tags. The woman from Krishna district underwent an emergency caesarean section before the Paravada woman delivered her baby.

However, the nursing staff handed the baby boy born to the Krishna district woman to the Paravada woman and vice versa. Around the time, these staff had completed their shifts and left. The mix-up was discovered when the mothers realised the error, leading to a commotion.

On getting to know about it, the hospital superintendent used CCTV footage. This led to confirmation of the mix-up. The commotion ended once the babies got handed over to their respective mothers.
