Vijayawada: Commuters in Vijayawada are struggling due to the lack of proper bus shelters at several busy locations, forcing them to wait under the scorching sun. Areas like Bandar Road, Eluru Road and Bhavanipuram see heavy traffic daily and lack adequate shelters, causing significant discomfort to passengers.
City buses are the primary mode of transport for nearly 60% of public transport users in Vijayawada, with over 200 city buses operating across Eluru Road, Bandar Road, Governorpet, Bhavanipuram, and Vidyadharapuram. Despite high demand, many bus stops lack shelters, particularly at Machavaram Down, Gunadala Centre, Gunadala Bridge, and Khandari Junction.
With no designated waiting areas, passengers stand on the roadside, increasing the risk of accidents.
K Yasaswini, a private employee, expressed frustration, saying, “Waiting near Khandari Junction is dangerous. Vehicles often come in the wrong direction, leading to accidents.”
As temperatures rise, the situation is worsening, with elderly passengers and women suffering the most. M Naresh, a BTech student, urged authorities to set up temporary shelters, stating, “Waiting under the sun is unbearable. At least a tent should be arranged during summer.”
Responding to concerns, Vijayawada Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi assured that new bus shelters will be set up and construction work will begin soon to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
