Vijayawada: Apart from expediting the process of granting approvals for Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam metro rail projects, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu sought 100% central funding for both projects during his meeting with Union urban affairs minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday.
The CM submitted a detailed note outlining the significance of both projects for the state. Stating that the two projects are crucial to reducing traffic congestion, fostering economic growth, improving urban mobility, enhancing infrastructure, and addressing urbanisation challenges in Andhra Pradesh, he highlighted the disparity, noting that Hyderabad’s metro rail project was approved before bifurcation, while they have remained pending for Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
Explaining that Visakhapatnam is facing traffic congestion with increased urbanisation and industrialisation, he stressed on the need to integrate national highways and the upcoming international airport at Bhogapuram with the metro rail corridor for better mobility. The first phase aims to connect major urban hubs, with an extension planned to the airport, he said.
Being the gateway to Amaravati, Vijayawada’s metro system is essential for strengthening regional connectivity and supporting economic growth. Naidu urged prioritising the project to meet the city’s growing transportation needs. He explained the financial constraints of the state post bifurcation and requested Khattar to extend 100% central assistance for both projects. He also sought support in securing approvals and land acquisition for the timely execution of phase 1 of both metro projects.
