CRDA to carry flood study for Amaravati | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: In a move to safeguard the capital city area from flood threat, the capital region development authority (CRDA) has decided to take up Hydro-geomorphological studies, aquifer geometry including Palaeo flood analysis in Amaravati.
The recent floods to Krishna river which inundated many areas in Vijayawada city prompted CRDA authorities to take additional measures to contain floods in the capital city area. In fact, the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have been insisting on CRDA to first set its focus on containing the flood flows into the capital city before taking major infrastructure projects including highways. With WB and ADB being the chief lending agencies for taking up major infrastructure works in the capital city, the CRDA has decided to go for scientific studies on the issue.
The CRDA invited expert agencies to join hands with it in preparation of GIS maps on Hydrogeomorphology, aquifer geometry Palaeo flood channel. The CRDA also invited agencies to ready plans for micro seismic zones with thematic layers of surface and subsurface features showing characteristics of soils and rocks, Palaeo channels, aquifers, water table, water recharge zones, flood modelling and other features.
The CRDA is planning to make best use of the maps and plans to conserve water resources and regulate city development particularly in the flood prone areas.
According to experts, Hydrogeomorphology will make landform analysis in identifying features like floodplains, river terraces, palaeochannels, and natural levees which indicate past flood events and can help map potential aquifer zones. It will also study drainage patterns including studying the network of rivers and streams to understand how water flows across the landscape and influences groundwater recharge.
