DIY engine oil and oil filter change on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport

DIY engine oil and oil filter change on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport

With a fleet of six cars, just the regular maintenance and the cleaning, washing, and polishing is keeping me busy. I don’t mind, I love a couple of hours fiddling like this. Very relaxing and very rewarding

BHPian Jeroen recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

You might recall I pulled the cylinder head of the Jeep some two months ago to inspect the piston. In the end, I decided to close up the engine again. But cleaning the engine block and cylinder head will always leave some residue. Unless you have the capability to flush out everything before assembly.

I have to do with just elbow grease lots of rags and solvents.

So it makes sense to do an engine oil and oil filter change after a couple of hundred kilometres. Those few hundred kilometres became almost 800 for various reasons.

So here we go. Jeep in the usual “oil drain spot” with my oil catch canister underneath.

This Jeep is so easy to work on underneath. I can just slide under there with my spanner.

I always mark the various oil cans for opening date and into which car it was/can be poured. An open oil cannister doesn’t really go off I think, but I am not sure I would want to pour 5-10 year old oil into an engine from a can that has been opened that long.

Also, the oil companies keep adding new oil types to replace earlier ones. Here in the west all oil manufacturers have online oil recommendation tools. You punch in your car registration and it will come up with the appropriate oil. (and also all other fluids, tranny, coolant, diff etc)

I have had oil with a certain product name that I could not trace anymore. So hence, I write the car for which I bought it at the time on the canister.

Changing engine oil and oil filters is one of the easiest jobs, requires very few tools.

My Jeep has done 2,05,000 miles! That is well run-in. So I have driven it just over 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometres) in three years of ownership.

I pour the old oil from the oil catch canister in one of the old oil cans and take it to the council tip where it will be disposed of properly. Free of charge!

I also decided to try out a new recently opened DIY car wash. Due to the fact that the Jeep has a permanent roof rack I can’t take it through the regular car wash.

I much prefer to hand wash my cars. But with six cars and currently it being wintertime it is just not practical. I do a bit of hoovering at home though.

I like a clean car inside and outside. The Mini has seen some very extensive use in the last few weeks. So time to muck it out!
