Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh govt received a proposal from the Krishna district police for the establishment of a dedicated police station near Vijayawada international airport in Gannavaram.
With growing security concerns and an increasing number of passengers, officials believe that a separate police station at the airport is essential.
Vijayawada airport, located close to the capital region of Amaravati, witnessed a steady rise in air traffic. Currently, the airport handles around 50 flight services daily, including an average of three special flights. Passenger footfall, which stood at 70,000 per month before June last year, surged to approximately 1.1 lakh per month. With the Andhra Pradesh govt focusing on completing the first phase of Amaravati’s construction within three years and attracting investments, the airport’s significance is expected to grow further.
According to police sources, at present, security at the airport falls under the supervision of the Gannavaram circle inspector. However, given the increasing traffic and security challenges, officials argue that a dedicated police station at the airport would streamline law enforcement operations. Establishing a new police station would not only ease the burden on the existing Gannavaram police station but also enhance safety for passengers, airline staff, and VIPs visiting the airport.
Officials suggest that if any incidents or cases arise within the airport premises, having a dedicated police station would ensure quicker response time and efficient case handling. Additionally, VIP security would also come under the purview of the new police station, further strengthening law enforcement in the region.
With the state govt actively considering future infrastructure needs, the demand for a police station at Vijayawada airport is gaining momentum. If approved, this move could significantly enhance passenger safety, streamline security operations, and support the airport’s growing prominence as a key transit hub in Andhra Pradesh.
