Hyderabad: Three popular eateries in Hyderabad were found violating hygiene standards with storage units being managed in a ‘filthy manner’, food safety officials noted. During the inspection, they observed rotten tomatoes, greasy walls and suspected the presence of rodents and cockroaches in one of the outlets. The officials conducted checks at two restaurants in the Ameerpet area, and one in Mehdipatnam’s Tolichowki.
During the check at the restaurant in Tolichowki, a team representing the Telangana Commissioner of Food Safety noticed rat faeces and cockroaches in its storage unit, with raw meat being kept uncovered in the refrigerator. Also, the restaurant workers stored veg and non-veg food together. Meanwhile, several food items were kept uncovered.
The inspection was conducted on March 5. In a social media post on X, formerly Twitter, the team shared that the walls of the kitchen were greasy. The exhausts and chimneys in the kitchen were in the same condition.
In one of the food outlets in Ameerpet, Amogha Hotel and & Cafe, officials found synthetic food colors, and also discarded them on suspicion of use in prepared food articles. They added that the toilet here was found to be opening directly into the kitchen, which may cause contaminations.
At another restaurant, Taaza Kitchen in Ameerpet, food safety officials found that several food handlers were not wearing hairnets, gloves etc. They found that rice flour, stored in a steel container, was infested with insects. Therefore, officials discarded the batch.
“Semi-prepared and raw materials, food and non-food items were stored together. Few vegetables (tomatoes) were found to be spoiled. Rusty iron knives were found being used for cutting vegetables,” a statement read.
