In a deeply saddening incident, a Hyderabad couple, Chandrasekhar Reddy, 44, and his wife, Kavitha, 35, ended their lives after allegedly taking the lives of their two young children, 13-year-old Shrita and 10-year-old Vishwan.
A suicide note, penned in Telugu by Mr. Reddy, reveals the family’s harrowing struggles: “I had no other option but to end my life. Please forgive me. I have been struggling in my career and suffering mentally and physically. I have been suffering from diabetes, nerve, and kidney-related issues.”
Sources informed NDTV that the family’s financial woes deepened after Mr. Reddy lost his job as a junior lecturer at a private college. He had been unemployed for nearly a year since 2023, which severely impacted the family’s economic situation.
When NDTV visited their residence on the third floor of an independent house in Hyderabad’s Habsiguda area, it appeared orderly.
Children’s bicycles, freshly washed clothes, and a football on the terrace painted a picture of everyday family life starkly contrasting with the tragedy that unfolded within its walls.
Police, responding to a distress call on the emergency line, discovered the bodies on Monday night. Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple might have strangulated their children before taking their own lives. The children were found in their respective bedrooms, with Mr. Reddy and Ms. Kavitha in separate rooms.
The couple hailed from Kalwakurthy in Telangana and had relatives in Hyderabad. Their deaths cast a spotlight on the vulnerability faced by many in India’s vast population, particularly the challenges of long-term unemployment and its toll on mental and physical health.
The bodies have been sent to the city’s Gandhi Hospital, and post-mortems are underway to delve deeper into this heartbreaking episode.
As authorities proceed with investigations, this tragic event underscores the urgent need for support systems to address mental health and financial instability in our communities.
