Hyderabad: Holi celebrations in the city are taking a greener turn as demand for organic colours surges. Markets once filled with chemical-laden powders are now stocked with eco-friendly alternatives, reflecting a shift in consumer awareness. Sellers note that this trend, barely noticeable two years ago, is now dominating sales.
“Many are opting for herbal-based colours due to concerns over skin reactions and water scarcity,” said a seller at RBR Complex in Miyapur.
Wholesale hubs like Begum Bazaar are seeing an even greater demand. “People are so committed to eco-friendly options that they’d rather buy mud than chemical colours,” said a seller from Shiv Shankar Traders, adding that business grew by 30% this year compared to 2024. Sri Ram Tiwari, owner of Rohit Trading, echoed the sentiment: “Our organic colour stock is almost sold out, with sales up by 18-20% from last year.”
Consumers are also driving the change. “I suffered skin rashes from chemical-based colours, so we’re going all-natural this time,” said S Vynavi, a 32-year-old mother.
Dermatologist Dr Karishni Chittirvu warned, “Synthetic colours contain lead and other irritants that can cause burns, acne flare-ups, and even hair damage. Applying almond or coconut oil beforehand can help create a protective barrier.”
Communities are also joining the movement amid a water crisis. Several residential associations have urged residents to conserve water, with some banning water pipes for Holi celebrations. “To ensure compliance, we are not setting up any water connections for Holi celebrations this year,” shared an association member of a gated gated community in Miyapur.
