A Mercedes car mowed down a group of labourers, leaving four dead and two injured, on the Mussoorie Road in Dehradun on Wednesday night.
Dehradun police said the car had a Chandigarh registration and was being driven “recklessly and at a high speed”. It was later found abandoned in an empty plot.
According to the police, the vehicle appears to have been purchased from Delhiand a Dehradun police team reached the national capital on Wednesday night to gather more information. Additionally, a special team from the Dehradun police has gone to Chandigarh to investigate and collect details regarding the vehicle owner, the police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh said they first received information around 8.15 pm on Wednesday. “Based on the time and location of the incident, we identified 11 vehicles that passed through the stretch with the help of CCTVs and started a thorough inspection at every checkpoint so the vehicle doesn’t leave the city,” he said.
The driver hit four pedestrians and a scooter. The deceased have been identified as Mansharam (30) and Ranjeet (35) from Ayodhya, Balkaran (40) from Barabanki, and Durgesh from Faizabad. The injured, who are undergoing treatment, have been identified as Dhaniram from Hardoi and Mohammad Shakib from Sitamarhi.
The duo were taken to Uttaranchal Hospital for treatment before being referred to Doon Government Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Government Hospital for post-mortem proceedings.
All police stations were alerted via the control room, and an intensive checking campaign was conducted to trace the vehicle. The deceased were staying at the Kath Bangla riverbank area and worked under a contractor.

On receiving information about the incident, the Inspector General of Police, Garhwal Range, and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, inspected the accident site and gathered details from the officers present.
An FIR was registered on Thursday morning at Rajpur police station based on a complaint from Mansharam’s relative. “My nephew and his companions were returning from work. As per eyewitnesses, an unknown Mercedes car with a Chandigarh registration number, being driven recklessly and negligently, hit these four pedestrians in front of Uttaranchal Hospital on Rajpur Road. As a result, they died on the spot. The same driver also hit a scooter carrying two other individuals, causing them serious injuries. After deliberately causing the accident, the driver fled the scene,” said the complaint by Sanjay Kumar.
