Despite the efforts being made to do good work, there was a long way to go for the Congress government in the State to get accolades from different sections of people, Floor Leader of the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Akbaruddin Owaisi said in the Assembly on Thursday.

Speaking on the motion thanking the Governor’s address, he said there was no timeline given for implementing many schemes – the promises made before the elections. Hailing the community survey conducted by the government recently, he said with the help of artificial intelligence and data collected as part of the survey the government could straight away select beneficiaries for ration cards, Indiramma houses, enhanced social security pensions among others.

He pointed out that all the promises made by the Congress party in its election manifesto were unconditional but when it came to implementation a lot of conditions were being applied. Citing a few examples he said the free power supply of 200 units a month to every household was promised under Gruha Jyothi, but only about 50% of the households/connections consuming less than 200 units a month were more than one crore in the State.

Similarly, the subsidised LPG cylinders were also being given to a section of households though there were about 90 lakh below poverty line families (ration card holders) in the State. Intervening the member’s speech, Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka said the schemes were meant only for the needy households.

Mr. Owaisi suggested the government to bring in legislation fixing a cap on subsidies and freebies as endless largesse would always end up in deep economic trouble.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Floor Leader A. Maheshwar Reddy said the Governor’s speech was a pack of lies, directionless and disappointing and hope creation was not seen anywhere. There was no commitment on implementing the six guarantees with backing of legislation.

Except for borrowing money (loans) no progress was visible in the State as the government had borrowed ₹1.52 lakh crore in one year, he said and pointed out that there was no local governance at any level as the term of all local bodies had expired and fresh elections were not being held.

Lone member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) K. Sambasiva Rao wanted the government to strictly deal with those misusing social media for false propaganda and character assassination. He suggested that the government publicise the good work being done. Highlighting the Centre’s discrimination against Southern States, he said one need not be surprised if a demand crops in future for a separate South India country.
