Rule of law rooted in dharma, says Telangana governor

Hyderabad: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said that the rule of law in India, as propagated by Mahatma Gandhi, should embody the right values, thinking, action, service, and compassion.
Speaking as chief guest at the national jurists conference organised by the Brahma Kumaris‘ jurists wing at the Global Peace auditorium, he highlighted that Gandhi’s vision of a dharma rajya, a nation governed by the rule of law infused with the values of dharma, would advance humanity.
Praising the Brahma Kumaris for their selfless service, the governor said that the earth cannot be owned, but should be shared. “In today’s fast-paced world, we only look at things, not into them. The Brahma Kumaris’ philosophy encourages us to look within,” he said.
Recalling the Bhagavad Gita, he reminded the audience of the importance of returning to dharma. “When people stray from dharma, god promises to return,” he quoted, reinforcing the idea of a civilisation rooted in dharma.
He added that jurists embody the confluence of dharma and nyaya (justice) and emphasised that professions, including law, should maintain the soul of their field. He also stressed that India’s message to the world is to look for the inner light within, quoting the ‘Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya’ sloka, which calls for progress alongside the preservation of the rich heritage.
Supreme Court Judge Justice SV Bhatti, who attended as a guest of honor, advised advocates to stay away from negative thoughts, focus on emotional intelligence, and dedicate time for inner peace. “We deal with disputes daily, so it’s essential to reflect on ourselves,” he said.
Justice Eswaraiah, part of the Brahma Kumaris’ jurists wing, shared how he learned the importance of inner peace at Mount Abu, the headquarters of Brahma Kumaris.
Justice B Vijaysen Reddy of the Telangana high court said that success for lawyers lies not in material wealth, but in the service they offer to the needy.
Justice T Amarnath Reddy of Tripura high court spoke of his achievement in clearing a record number of cases, while Justice Surepalli Nanda and Justice Alishetti Laxmi Narayana from Telangana HC also attended.
