Tenants Trapped in Extra Charge

Hyderabad is becoming increasingly expensive for tenants. From soaring rents to arbitrary security deposit deductions, many residents are struggling to cope with the financial strain of urban living. And although it’s definitely not the only city suffering through this, it definitely is in the spotlight due to a recent post that went viral.

The recent case of a Hyderabad tenant, Tanvi Mittal, sheds light on the issue. Despite vacating her flat in perfect condition, her landlord unfairly deducted ₹30,000 from her ₹1,04,000 security deposit. Charges like ₹15,000 for AC servicing and ₹5,000 for an RO filter were imposed without justification.

Her ordeal is not unique, that is several tenants have reported similar experiences, where landlords exploit vague clauses to withhold security deposits.

Rent prices have also surged dramatically, with many middle-class families struggling to afford decent housing. Even basic apartments now demand exorbitant security deposits, often amounting to six months’ rent. Brokers and landlords impose hidden charges, and with no proper regulation, tenants have little legal recourse.

The lack of government intervention has worsened the situation. Unlike in cities like London, where rental deposit protection laws exist, Hyderabad’s rental agreements heavily favor landlords.

Until clear tenant protection laws are enforced, like those in US, Hyderabad’s rising cost of living will continue to burden its residents, making housing affordability a distant dream.
