Apple to Begin AirPods Production in India at Foxconn’s Hyderabad Plant [Report]

Apple is set to expand its manufacturing footprint in India with the production of AirPods reportedly slated to begin at Foxconn’s Hyderabad facility in April 2025, according to an Economic Times report. This move marks the second product line, following iPhones, that the tech giant will produce in the country, with output initially focused on exports, according to industry sources.

The decision builds on Foxconn’s investment of $400 million—roughly Rs 3,500 crore—approved in August 2023 to establish the Hyderabad factory. An industry source told PTI, “Production of AirPods is going to start in India at Foxconn’s Hyderabad facility. It will begin from April, but it will be only for exports as of now.” Neither Apple nor Foxconn responded to email inquiries about the development.

Apple’s dominance in the true wireless stereo (TWS) market adds weight to this shift. Canalys data from 2024 shows the company holding a 23.1 percent share globally, far ahead of Samsung’s estimated 8.5 percent. The Hyderabad production line reinforces Apple’s supply chain diversification, even as trade dynamics shift with reciprocal tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, set to take effect April 2, 2025.

India currently levies a 20 percent import duty on hearables and wearables, while the U.S. applies none, per the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). The group has suggested waiving such duties on U.S. imports could benefit India, especially as Apple recently pledged $500 billion for U.S. manufacturing over the next four years. For now, the Hyderabad AirPods effort remains export-driven, aligning with Apple’s broader global strategy.

Recent reports suggest the Apple is developing a third-generation AirPods Pro and a model with AI-enabled cameras, following recent releases such as AirPods Max (USB-C) and AirPods 4. Additionally, the company is working to bring new software features to AirPods including Live Translation.
