Laughter, camaraderie mark legislators’ sports meet in Andhra Pradesh

Vijayawada: The legislators’ sports meet was inaugurated with great enthusiasm on Tuesday, marking the revival of a longstanding tradition in Andhra Pradesh.
Assembly speaker Chintakayala Ayyannapatrudu led the inauguration, emphasising the historical significance of the event and recalling its origins during the tenure of former chief minister N T Rama Rao.
Ayyannapatrudu officially launched the three-day event by striking the first shot with a cricket bat, symbolising the commencement of the competitions. He reminisced about his participation in cultural programmes during NTR’s time, where he performed the monologue ‘Danaveerasura Karna’ and received accolades. He noted that these activities provide much-needed recreation for legislators who are otherwise engaged in governance responsibilities.
The event was further highlighted by deputy speaker Raghuramakrishnam Raju, along with other ministers and the chief whip, who lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the grand inauguration. MLAs who are part of the sports management committee conducted a march-past, demonstrating their commitment to the competitions.
Various sporting events, including cricket, tug-of-war, and other team competitions, witnessed enthusiastic participation. Women ministers and MLAs took part in the tug-of-war competition, while MLAs formed teams to compete in cricket matches, with teams led by the chief minister and the speaker.
Minister for sports and youth affairs, Ramprasad Reddy, assured that the govt will enhance sports incentives and encourage greater participation in sporting activities across the state. He urged MLAs to actively promote sports in their constituencies to help nurture young talent.
SAP chairman Ravinaidu praised the meticulous arrangements made for the event, highlighting that the revival of this tradition under the guidance of Speaker Ayyannapatrudu reflects the govt’s commitment to fostering a sports culture among public representatives.
With vibrant participation from legislators, the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium turned into a hub of energy and excitement, reinforcing the importance of sports and recreation in governance circles.
