Hyderabad: Three persons, including an infant, died, while 13 others suffered injuries after an overcrowded auto rickshaw met with an accident on the suburbs of Suryapet town on Thursday. Three of the injured, including auto driver Mahesh, are reportedly in critical condition.
Around 4.30pm, a group of passengers were travelling in a share auto. The three-wheeler was reportedly first hit by a car from the rear side.Following this, the auto rammed into a stationary lorry ahead of it. A person died on the spot and two others succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. Immediately after the accident, there was chaos on the National Highway. Locals rushed to the rescue of the injured persons and shifted them to hospital.
The deceased were identified as C Saritha, 44, a teacher, Lunawath Rukhamma, 63, and 17-month-old G Vedasvini. Among the injured, three persons — Lavanya, Saidulu and auto driver Mahesh — were said to be in critical condition.
The auto and the car were travelling in the same direction. “It was a share auto. We are yet to ascertain whether the persons travelling in the auto were related to each other,’’ police said.
“The driver of the chilli-laden lorry parked the vehicle on the road to attend nature’s call. After the car hit the auto, it crashed into the lorry,” Suryapet superintendent of police Rahul Hegde told TOI. At the time of the accident, the auto driver was playing loud music besides talking over the phone.
District collector S Venkata Rao also took stock of the accident. He visited the hospital and spoke to doctors about the treatment being given to the injured. Ten teams were formed and the persons in critical condition were shifted to NIMS, Hyderabad.
