A Bengaluru techie’s terrible experience with a Rapido driver has gone viral, raising questions about the safety of these platforms for women passengers, or anyone in general.

Babita Thakur, a software development test engineer based in Bengaluru had to face harassment and threats from her rapido driver in the middle of her journey.

She explained, “The driver stopped the car at a petrol pump and started demanding advance payment. When I refused, he threatened me, and soon 2-3 unknown men gathered and supported the driver, making the situation more unsafe.”

The men seemed to show arrogance to the lone woman, showcasing their indifference to the police when she threatened to file a complaint.

She took the matter to social media, after which Rapido was quick to suspend the involved ‘captains’.

It is these kinds of acts that lower the trust of people in such services. While most gig workers are simple and honest, some pests like these are hidden in the system, striving to show their hollow pride to threaten lonely people and make some quick bucks.

It is no surprise that with acts like these becoming more common, the number of women using these services has decreased rapidly.

We as a collective society need to make those around us feel safe, setting an example out of such unsocial elements so that incidents like these never happen in the future.
