Court sentences ragpicker to 25-year jail for raping girl | Hyderabad News


Hyderabad: A city court sentenced a 28-year-old ragpicker to rigorous imprisonment for 25 years for brutally assaulting and raping a six-year-old homeless girl at Nallakunta in 2023. T Anitha, XII additional sessions judge, Nampally, announced 7 lakh compensation to the survivor and imposed a fine of 15,000.
Statement of witnesses, electronic, and medical evidence proved the guilt of Rajanala Ramesh, resulting in his conviction, said public prosecutor A Ram Reddy, who argued the case.
According to Nallakunta police, the girl’s family migrated to the city from AP’s Nandyal and the girl was residing with her mother and siblings at Kacheguda railway station.
In June 2023, when the girl was with her mother, Ramesh, who also stayed on the roadside, offered to buy her breakfast and took her with him to Nallakunta. At an isolated place, he sexually assaulted her. When she raised an alarm, he attacked her with liquor bottle on her head, kicked her in the stomach, and also hit her with a stone on her face, leaving her severely injured.
Hearing her cries, locals rushed to the spot, but Ramesh fled from the spot. Nallakunta police arrested him based on CCTV and other clues and filed a chargesheet in Aug 2023. The court took up the trial a year ago and pronounced the verdict on Friday.
