Erode: A thief who stole half a kilogram of gold and $18,000 from a jewellery shop in Hyderabad was arrested during a vehicle check near Chithode on Coimbatore-Salem National Highway in the early hours of Saturday.The Chithode police identified the arrested person as Pugalvasan, 38, of Singanallur in Coimbatore. He would be handed over to the Hyderabad police, who are on the way to take him in their custody.
According to a police officer, they conducted a vehicle check on the NH near Chithode based on a specific tip from the Hyderabad police that a thief from Coimbatore was travelling to his hometown on a private bus after committing a crime in their jurisdiction.
“During the vehicle check, we found Pugalvasan was in possession of half a kilo of gold and $18,000. Since he didn’t have any documents to prove the source of foreign currency and the gold, we interrogated him and came to know that he was involved in a robbery in Hyderabad. He was travelling to Coimbatore from Hyderabad. We took him to the police station and alerted the Hyderabad police,” the officer said.
The Chithode police have seized the gold and foreign currency from Pugalvasan.
