With multiple cases filed over the promotion of betting apps, what reforms do you expect?
A significant momentum has been built against betting apps. Social media influencers, who once promoted these apps, have now stopped, and newcomers will think twice before accepting such offers from betting app companies — entities that operate no differently from organised mafias. The Telangana Police have led the fight against illegal schemes prioritising public safety.
Do you believe holding celebrities and influencers accountable for promoting betting platforms will bring a change?
Yes, absolutely. Celebrities and social media influencers are directly responsible for promoting these apps, and people enrolled in them based on the trust they placed in these public figures. By endorsing such platforms, these influencers have wrongfully exploited their followers’ trust for financial gain. Celebrities must conduct due diligence before endorsing any company or product. Just as people trust and buy toothpaste, milk mix, or hair oil endorsed by their favourite actors, they are equally influenced by them regarding betting apps.
You head the TGSRTC but what inspired you to take a stand against online scams and betting?
I am affected by the tragic loss of lives due to betting apps. I discovered that these apps have become one of the most dangerous addictions among young people, especially in rural areas. These apps exploit teenagers, which is deeply disturbing and, frankly, inhuman. My social media campaigns — ironically, the very platforms these betting apps use for promotion — are gaining significant traction. In just the last one week, our efforts have generated over 90 million digital footprints.
Have you encountered cases where betting apps have led to financial ruin or criminal activities?
Several cases have been registered in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh where individuals have ended their lives after losing money to betting apps. One such incident occurred in Nizamabad, where a young man and his parents ended their lives due to the devastating impact of these apps. Police have gathered evidence in these cases.
What measures do you suggest to strengthen the enforcement against such platforms?
While police will continue to do their part, it is our collective responsibility to raise awareness about these apps. A significant portion of social media users are aged between 16 and 30, making it crucial for parents to actively monitor their children’s online activities. If a child suddenly appears sad, upset or repeatedly asks for money, it is essential to question their needs and understand the reasons behind their behaviour.
Do you think strict laws can solve the issue, or is a change in social mindset also necessary?
To the celebrities and influencers promoting these apps, my message is clear: your actions have far-reaching consequences. By endorsing these platforms, you are not merely promoting an app—you are supporting a system that preys on vulnerable individuals, destroys families, and ruins lives. You have a duty to your followers and to society at large.
To those who indulge in these apps, I urge you to critically evaluate the risks. These platforms are designed to exploit you, often leading to financial ruin, mental health struggles, and even loss of life. There are better, safer ways to spend your time and resources, as well as more ethical ways to earn money. If you’re struggling, seek help immediately.
