The use of modern technology in fair price shops in Telangana has resulted in the seizure of rice worth ₹409 crore that was being diverted from the Public Distribution System (PDS), said Principal Secretary, Civil Supplies and the State Public Distribution System (PDS) department, D.S. Chauhan. The introduction of technological reforms have curbed irregularities and ensured route optimisation saving between ₹12 to ₹15 crore for the State, he added.

Speaking at an international seminar held at IIM Raipur, Mr. Chauhan highlighted the impact of these reforms. He said: “The reforms implemented in the PDS department, and the State government’s decision to distribute fine rice through the PDS system have ensured food security for the marginalised. Telangana is now a role model for the country.”

A key achievement has been the SKOCH Award for paddy procurement, which recognised the State’s adaptive approach to changing weather conditions during procurement. By strictly adhering to quality, the department has eliminated opportunities for malpractice. Additionally, the State government’s agreement with the Philippines for rice exports is a significant milestone for the PDS department, he added.
