HC notices to GHMC chief, others over drainage tunnel works

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court has issued notices to top officials over the ongoing drainage tunnel works from Moti Darwaza to Tolichowki after the residents expressed serious concerns over the works.
A bench comprising acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara issued notices to the principal secretary of the municipal administration department, GHMC commissioner, HMWS&SB managing director, and the Rangareddy district collector. The bench directed the officials to file their responses within three weeks.
The court took up the matter in response to a letter from residents of Khairatabad and Tolichowki, as a public interest litigation. The residents wrote to the Chief Justice, claiming that the works were initiated without conducting an impact assessment or consulting experts on its potential effects on the area.
The residents expressed fears that the ongoing works, including drilling and excavation, could seriously pose problems to the structural integrity of nearby buildings. They reported feeling vibrations from the works, and voiced concerns about the possible collapse of their homes.
The petitioners urged the court to halt the work immediately and direct the authorities to conduct a comprehensive study. They also requested implementation of safeguards in case of any untoward incidents.
