My Punch.ev experience + total charging cost on a 2,600 km road trip

Overall, I’ve grown to love the car more and respect Tata for what they’ve made with the Punch EV.

BHPian luffy_op recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Mysore to Shirdi and back, a trip covering 2600+ km over 5 days on the Tata Punch EV LR

I’ll capture the summary and some tips for anyone wanting to take on such trips in the future, I wanted to pen down the whole ordeal, but I soon realized it would take quite some time to write in details, So, if anyone wants to know more, I’ll try to write it, until then the hoping the following might be helpful.

Tldr:

  • Use the plugshare to plan the trips, keep the estimated range a bit less than what you might be getting inside the city, as a buffer while finding the chargers, I found eHUB by MG, Statiq as good alternative apps for planning your routes.
  • Make sure you have some backup options for chargingavoid going on routes having just 1 charger, there are chances the chargers can be down.
  • Some chargers have their own apps, so having it downloaded and the wallet topped up would save time.
  • Charge whenever you canif possible try to charge till 100%, provided no other car is waiting, if possible start the day off at 100%some hotels do provide slow charging, so please do check with them.
  • Try to coast on the highways at a constant speed, avoid sudden accelerations, use regeneration level 0/1, I personally found maintaining speed around 75-80km/hr most balanced between distance covered and energy consumed.
  • The car was an absolute gem to drive was not fatigued by all day driving, taking frequent breaks to top up is one of the reasons.
  • The boot was enough for 4 people to carry 5days of luggage without any issue.
  • Some Quick stats:
    • Total distance covered: 2669.8 km
    • Total cost for charging: Rs. 7,239.33
    • Rs/km: 2.7 (which came out higher than what I was expecting, due to higher pricing by the providers in MH)
    • Units consumed: 266.58‬ kWh
    • Max single day distance covered was 643km.

Some cons:

  1. The charging speed capped at around 27kWh when the chargers can pump out till 60kWh and even 120 kWh.
  2. The headlight throw in the low beam needs to be a bit brighter for those annoyingly bad highway roads.
  3. Missing Rear AC vents was felt sometimes.
  4. The highway range of around 200 after which you have to look for chargers, seems less when the roads are really good and you do not feel like taking a break but would be forced to.
