A first-year MBBS student of Government Medical College (GMC) Nagarkurnool has filed a complaint alleging that he was subjected to abuse and humiliation by senior students. Three senior students, one from the third year and two from the second year, were involved in the incident, which occurred on the evening of March 25.

Dr. Ramadevi, principal of GMC Nagarkurnool, stated that the incident occurred when a senior instructed a junior to fetch a water mug from another senior’s room. Upon knocking on the door, the junior inadvertently disturbed the senior inside, who was asleep at the time. Irritated by the disruption, the senior yelled at him. The senior, along with another student, then summoned the junior into the room and forced him to sit in an “air chair”, a stress position. They also confiscated his phone and demanded his UPI PIN.

“When the junior refused to share his banking details, one of the seniors allegedly assaulted him, beat him with a belt multiple times and slapped him. The distressed student later informed his relatives, who are police officials,” said Dr. Ramadevi.

Upon receiving information from the police, Dr. Ramadevi contacted the Additional Superintendent of Police, who instructed the Station House Officer to take action. The accused students were taken to the police station for interrogation, and an FIR was registered against them. They were later sent back to the hostel with instructions for further discussions with the college administration.

Dr. Ramadevi stated that she had spoken to the students involved but wanted their parents to be present before taking further action. A meeting with the parents has been scheduled for April 2, following which the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee will review the case. The principal has also informed the Director of Medical Education (DME) about the incident, she said.

Regarding disciplinary action, Dr. Ramadevi confirmed that the accused students would be suspended, but the final decision would be taken after the parents’ meeting.
