Epic Experience or Cash Grab?

Salman Khan’s Sikandar has created widespread controversy on the internet as it prepares for its IMAX launch. Critics suggest that the content showcased till date does not even reach the quality of 2D films, far less command an IMAX release.

Choosing to release Sikandar in IMAX without much visually significant material has triggered comments on why this has been done.

Pre-bookings for Sikandar opened on March 25, with IMAX screens following later in certain cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai. Yet, the film is up against tough competition from Mohanlal’s L2 Empuraan, which takes over IMAX show slots in Kerala and elsewhere.

Further adding to the chaos, Warner Bros’ A Minecraft Movie, specifically designed for IMAX 3D, enters the picture next week, setting the stage for a unique three-way showdown in IMAX screens.

While Sikandar has Salman Khan’s stardom and a record-breaking trailer of 81 million views within 24 hours, people are still doubtful if it would be able to provide an IMAX-worthy experience.

With steep ticket prices of up to ₹2,200 in big cities and precious little IMAX time to spare, people ask themselves whether this is a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic experience or a strategic cashing-in on Eid fervor.
