HYDERABAD: A 30-year-old woman was arrested by Cyberabad police on Thursday for allegedly killing her 13-day-old daughter out of fear that she would be unable to care for the child in the future.
According to police, Arogya Vijji’s husband, Mudalai Mani, is suffering from kidney failure and is on dialysis. Worried about his deteriorating health and her inability to raise their daughter alone, Vijji took the extreme step, said Mailardevpally SHO P Narender. She was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday.
On March 25, after Mani left for work, Vijji called him, claiming she found their baby floating in a bucket full of water after finishing her bath. Mani rushed home and took the infant to the hospital, but she was already dead.
Initially, police registered a suspicious death case and began an investigation. CCTV footage from the surroundings showed no suspicious persons near the house. Investigators also noted that the distance between the baby’s cot and the bucket was about five metres, making accidental drowning unlikely.
A post-mortem examination confirmed homicidal death, leading police to question Vijji. She eventually broke down and confessed to drowning the baby.
Police revealed that the couple, who migrated from Tamil Nadu and worked in a small industrial unit in Katedan, also have a 15-month-old son. Vijji reportedly believed that raising a boy would be easier than raising a girl, prompting her to take the drastic step.
