Test rode the new KTM Adventure 390: 10 key takeaways from my ride

Overall a very good competition to the more refined Himalayan.

Had a chance to test ride the 390 Adv last week. Listing down my takeaways from a very brief ride on paved roads

  • Very linear, non-KTM like pull. The bike pulls, but more like a Honda if you ignore the vibrations. That said, I couldn’t check how the bike felt at higher revs
  • Gnarly vibrations at footpegs at around 5k rpms. I know that its a big single, but the engine at that rev range didn’t feel anything like the current gen 390 Duke in terms of refinement. Only reason I can think of is a new fuel map to boost the midrange creating this vibration but the counterbalancing is more focused on highway speeds. I was wearing my office shoes and felt the vibes at the pegs to be too tingly. Handlebars were fine at this point. Felt that the vibes settled down as the speed picked up
  • Could hear some panel near the tank vibrating, harmonious to the revs
  • Not sure what settings the suspensions were at, but could see that the sharp speedbumps were dealt with without any drama
  • Mirrors felt solid but was refusing to move when I tried adjusting it
  • The motorcycle generally felt very light and nimble
  • Would definitely prefer a shorter screen for city/daily use
  • Front brake felt a bit wooden but did not lack stopping power. Probably because I jumped on to this right from a motorcycle with uprated and far superior brakes
  • The side stand has a weird shape. I had to double check if it was fully extended because it looked like it has not
  • Felt that the front raised fender looked too long and pointed up. A shorter one curved down a bit (like the 890 adv) would have looked better

Have to take a longer test ride to validate my initial expressions. Overall a very good competition to the more refined Himalayan
