The Eluru One Town police, on Sunday, arrested S. Durga Prasad for allegedly murdering his grandmother, S. Ramanamma (68), at her residence at Vennelavaripeta in the town on Friday.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) N. Surya Chandra Rao told the media that the accused, unable to repay his debts, targeted Ramanamma, aka Chittila Ramanamma, who was living alone. Durga Prasad strangled her to death and tried to destroy the evidence by burning the body. However, the neighbours who noticed smoke coming from her house alerted the fire department, and then the police.
Police arrested the accused at Pampula Cheruvu Gattu on Sunday after reviewing the CCTV footage from the vicinity. They recovered gold ornaments worth ₹4 lakh and some cash from his possession, said Eluru DSP D. Sravan Kumar.
