Hyderabad: A doctor looking to take a franchise of a prominent retail garment brand was duped of Rs 47 lakh by cyber fraudsters.
In his complaint to Rachakonda police, the doctor said he had searched in Google for information, downloaded a form and emailed it expressing interest. A few days later, he received a phone call from a ‘franchise development manager’ who answered his queries and asked him to pay Rs 1 lakh as registration fee.
Over a period of one month, the victim paid Rs 8 lakh as licence fee, Rs 12 lakh (security deposit), Rs 10 lakh (NOC) and Rs 14 lakh (agreement processing fee).
The doctor said he grew suspicious when they demanded more money. The accused stopped all communication when the doctor said he would pay the remaining amount directly at their main office, which they had said was in Bandra. By then he had already paid Rs 47 lakh.
Rachakonda cyber crime police have registered a case of cheating and violation of the Information Technology Act.
