Hyderabad: Sewage overflow leaves residents of Rahmatnagar in cesspool

Hyderabad: Residents of Rahmatnagar X Roads in Yousufguda are facing severe inconvenience due to sewage overflow. Not just the residents, even the pedestrians are having a tough time.
Despite the periodic intervention of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to address the issue, the problem continues to resurface frequently, with sewage water stagnating on the main road for days.
The issue has left residents worried, with many fearing the potential spread of waterborne diseases as the stagnant water serves as a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Meanwhile, local shopkeepers claim decline in their business as customers started avoiding the area due to the unpleasant conditions.
On the other hand, HMWSSB officials said improper disposal of household waste was a major contributor to the problem. During maintenance work, the officials said, they regularly found vegetable waste and clothes, among others clogging the sewerage lines. These prevent the normal flow of wastewater through the drainage system.
“Our measures include more frequent cleaning schedules and deployment of teams during overflow incidents. We are also monitoring critical points along the sewerage network to identify potential blockage spots before they cause major overflows. In this particular case, our teams have already cleared the affected area. However, we will take up a thorough inspection to identify the root cause of frequent overflow of sewage onto the road,” said a senior official in HMWSSB.
