Vijayawada: TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh is likely to be named as the party’s national president during the ‘Mahanadu’, to be held in Kadapa from May 27 to 29. Though a final decision is yet to be made on whether to make him the national president or working president, there is a likelihood that he would be asked to step into the shoes of his father, chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, and lead the four-decade-old party.
The three-day ‘Mahanadu’ event is being held in Kadapa, considered a stronghold of YSRCP. Lokesh has been suggesting for some time to initiate reforms in the party, and bring in some young faces to further strengthen it. He has said on multiple occasions that no one should continue in a party post for more than three terms.
Lokesh, who is in his fourth term as national general secretary, is learnt to have requested party president Naidu to start the reforms with him. Speaking at the party’s foundation day programme recently, Lokesh said he has completed three terms and it’s now time to take up a bigger role or take a break to make way for others. He also pitched for infusing young blood into the party’s frontal organisations while duly respecting the seniors. However, performance should be the only yardstick for any post, irrespective of seniority or juniority, he said.
Senior politburo member Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy was among the first to come forward, and announced that he is ready step down from his position to make way for a young leader. Somireddy has been a member of TDP’s top decision-making body since 2012. “If the party leadership is thinking of bringing in progressive reforms and infuse young blood, seniors like me should gracefully give way to the younger generation. I am ready to forego my position as politburo member if the party leadership decides to implement the reforms,” said Somireddy.
