Telangana government’s efforts to provide air passenger connectivity for Adilabad received a major fillip as the Indian Air Force (IAF) agreed in principle to its proposal for civil aircraft operations from Adilabad airfield.
There has been a long pending demand from denizens of Adilabad for establishment of an airport in the district headquarters town, where an old airstrip of the IAF is located on the periphery. In response to a request from the Telangana government for setting up of an airport in Adilabad for civil operations, a communiqué dated April 1, 2025, from the Ministry of Defence said, “The proposal has been examined in consultation with the IAF. The IAF envisages setting up of a training establishment at the location in future. IAF in principle agreed to the proposal of the Telangana government for civil aircraft operations from Adilabad airfield.”
“IAF suggested that the said airfield could be developed as a joint user airfield with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) acquiring contiguous land for civil terminal, aircraft parking apron and other infrastructure. The runway would need to be resurfaced and a civil apron connected to the runway with link taxi tracks,” the communiqué said.
The State government has been advised to request the AAI to submit a detailed proposal for issuance of no-objection certificate (NOC) by IAF.
Meanwhile, in a statement Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said Telangana government’s relentless efforts bore fruit as IAF agreed for civil aircraft’s operations from Adilabad airfield. This comes close on the heels of the Centre’s nod for Mamnoor airport at Warangal. A report containing detailed proposals for the development of Adilabad airport will be prepared and submitted to the Centre for obtaining the requisite permissions in this regard.
