All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi joined a dharna in New Delhi to back 42% reservations for backward classes and demanded that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government introduce a Bill in Parliament to breach the 50% ceiling on reservations.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeatedly claims to be associated with the backward classes. We demand that he demonstrate this commitment by introducing a bill in the Parliament of India to break the 50% reservation cap. By doing so, breaking the ceiling, he should ensure justice for 80% of the country’s population,” said Mr. Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha.
He maintained that while 80% of the population receives only 38% or 40% reservation, communities that constitute just 10% of the population are granted 20% reservation, which he said “cannot happen.”
“On behalf of my party, I support this demand and consider it of paramount importance to highlight that in categories B, C, and E, several backward-class Muslim communities would benefit from these reservations,” Mr Owaisi said.
