Protest near Ambedkar Statue postponed, hours after High Court’s stay orders

Hours after the Telangana High Court stayed the cutting of trees on 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli, the ‘HCU (Hyderabad Central University) Students’ Biodiversity Fight Solidarity Programme’, scheduled for Wednesday evening, was postponed.

Around 5 p.m., nearly 100 uniformed officials from the Central Zone of the Hyderabad police surrounded the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Statue on Necklace Road, Secunderabad. More than 10 mini vans and buses were stationed near the main entrance of the premises, prepared for preventive arrests of any protesters.

“We have not received any requests for permission regarding any programme or protest in the area. Anyone staging a protest without approval will be detained,” said Secretariat Inspector Chitti Bura.

Representatives of student union groups from University of Hyderabad (UoH) and other universities in the city shared that the programme will now be conducted on Thursday.
