Reliance to invest Rs100bn in solar power project in Kurnool, India

Reliance NU Suntech, a subsidiary of Reliance Power, plans to invest Rs100bn ($1.16bn) to establish a solar power plant with a battery energy storage system in Kurnool district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, as reported by the Indian Express.

The project will be Asia’s largest solar and battery energy storage project, with a 930MW solar energy contract and a 465MW/1,860 megawatt-hours battery energy storage system (BESS) component.

The initiative will deliver a peak power supply for four hours a day.

Reliance NU Suntech has secured the largest individual allocation of 930MW through a competitive e-reverse auction.

This is part of a larger 2,000MW bid capacity for Inter State Transmission System-connected solar projects.

With a 24-month timeline for commissioning after the signing of the power purchase agreement (PPA), the project is on a fast track to completion.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) will enter a 25-year PPA with Reliance NU Suntech, ensuring the supply of solar power to distribution companies across India.

The Kurnool solar power project, with its advanced battery storage system, will be a groundbreaking development in the region.

By integrating solar power with BESS, the project will enhance the reliability and cost-effectiveness of renewable energy sources. This move by Reliance NU Suntech is set to enhance India’s renewable energy capacity significantly.

The solar power plant represents a leap forward in renewable energy and boosts the local economy.

It is expected to generate 1,000 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs during its construction phase.

The project will reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels by ensuring a consistent power supply even during low solar generation periods. It also highlights Reliance NU Suntech’s position in the power generation sector.
