J&K Assembly Becomes War Zone Over Waqf Bill

The NDA led Government of India passed a sensational amendment recently by modifying the Waqf Bill. The bill was presented in the Parliament by Kiren Rijiju, and it was passed by the majority of the House. The president of India, Draupadi Murmu validated the bill and it has now become a standard law.

Though certain Muslim groups have been protesting against the same, there isn’t a widespread public outrage on this matter.

However, the Jammu and Kashmir assembly has reflected a war zone while debating this Waqf bill and the repercussions on the same that will be felt by the Muslim community.

The Waqf amendment Act has sparked major unrest in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, with opposition parties like the National Conference and PDP protesting strongly.

Factually speaking, the amendment act that passed by India’s Parliament, allows non-Muslims on waqf boards and expands government control over Muslim endowments. A section of Muslims argue that it violates religious freedom and threatens the autonomy of Muslim institutions.

Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather condemned it, calling it unconstitutional. A resolution against the Act was passed by the ruling alliance, calling it anti-Muslim. During this discussion, we see the MLAs in the house quarrelling on this issue that has now become a national sensation.
