Guntur municipal body initiates steps to check stray dog menace | Vijayawada News

Guntur: Following the recent death of an infant in stray dog attack, Guntur municipal corporation (GMC) has started several initiatives to tackle the menace in the city. GMC commissioner Puli Srinivasulu has directed to resume sterlisation activity at the existing animal birth control (ABC) centre in Etukuru dumping yard with immediate effect.
As the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has allowed GMC to continue the ABC with its own team of doctors, Srinivasulu requested the govt to depute additional veterinarians to the city in view of the emergency situation. The govt immediately transferred five veterinarians to the GMC to take up the sterilization work.
The commissioner held separate meetings with animal lovers, NGOs, and chicken and meat stall owners. He requested the NGOs involved in animal protection activities to extend their support to the civic body in handling the situation. “Officials are unable to perform their duties under extreme pressure due to the frequent and frivolous complaints being lodged by NGOs and animal lovers about the procedures adopted by the GMC. We need your support to make the city free of dog menace,” he told them.
The NGOs, while promising to extend their support to the GMC, requested the authorities to follow the prescribed norms in maintaining the ABCs. “We are extending our fullest support to the GMC. The authorities should simply be strict with the rules and regulations prescribed in the Act and make the ABCs hygienic,” said Tejovanth Anupoju of Help for Animals Society (HfAS).
The commissioner also held a separate meeting with meat and chicken stall owners and directed them not to dispose the waste close to their stalls, open areas or drains. He further said that GMC will launch a crackdown on unauthorized stalls to prevent illegal sale of meat and chicken. He asked them to do businesses by securing trade licenses from the civic body.
