Defenseman Drew Doughty has been named as the LA Kings’ nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player each season that best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
The Masterton Trophy was first awarded at the end of the 1967-68 season in honor of the late Minnesota North Star Bill Masterton, who died following injuries sustained in a game against the Oakland Seals on January 15th, 1968.
Doughty’s comeback from a serious ankle fracture sustained during the pre-season certainly embodies the perseverance of a player that has always looked like he was born to play hockey.

Since returning to the lineup on January 29th, Doughty has registered 4 goals and 13 assists and is a +9 in 28 games played. His leadership and ability to eat up huge minutes in all situations make him an indispensable part of this LA Kings team.
In terms of defensemen in LA Kings history, Doughty is already all over the record book. Doughty’s 160 career goals rank just behind Rob Blake franchise mark of 161. However, after that, it’s Drew all the way, all day.
Number 8 leads all Kings defensemen in assists (526), points (686), even-strength goals (77), overtime goals (8), and game-winning goals (34).
Doughty is also the first defenseman in LA Kings history to play over 1,200 games, a testament to his incredible durability. His trophy case is filled with two Stanley Cup championships, two Olympic gold medals, a Norris Trophy, and multiple All-Star selections, solidifying his legacy as one of the all-time great LA Kings.
Should Doughty win the Masterton Trophy, he would be the fourth King to do so, following Butch Goring (1978), Bob Bourne (1988), and franchise legend Dave Taylor (1991).
