Hyderabad: Rainwater has seeped through gaps in some flyovers and damaged the new paintings on their pillars, leaving an ugly look and sparking concerns about the effective use of taxpayer funds. The paintings at the Masab Tank and Telugu Talli flyovers are among the worst affected.
At both the flyover, paintings on multiple pillars have suffered extensive damage as rainwater seeped through the concrete slabs. In many instances, the water has left unsightly black vertical streaks and damp patches.
A retired GHMC engineer criticised the project, stating, “Before beautification works are taken up, the issues related to rainwater seepage should have been addressed.” The engineer highlighted that several flyovers lack proper water exit provisions, leading to waterlogging on the roadway whenever there is even a moderate spell of rain.
The GHMC had allocated `149.84 crore for city beautification, which included not only paintings on flyover pillars but also the installation of art works at strategic junctions. The responsibility for maintaining these flyovers and restoring damaged roads lies with the corporation’s maintenance wing.
