Hyderabad doctors remove bullet from Somali patient’s brain

Doctors at Care Hospitals, HiTech City, removed a bullet lodged in a patient’s brain in an intricate surgery that has given a 26-year-old Somali national a new lease on life.

The patient, Gulem Mohamud Hersi, suffered a gunshot wound in Somalia and was airlifted to Hyderabad in a comatose state. Upon arrival, he was found to have severe neurological deficits, including weakness in both his arms and legs. A comprehensive medical evaluation revealed the bullet was embedded in a highly sensitive area of the brain, prompting the neurosurgical team to prepare for an emergency intervention.

The complex procedure was led by Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju, senior consultant neuro-surgeon. “This was an extraordinarily rare case. The bullet was lodged in a very critical region of the brain. It required meticulous planning and extreme precision to extract the projectile without causing additional harm to vital brain functions,” Dr. Sivaraju explained.

Despite the high risk, the surgery was successful, and Hersi has since shown significant post-operative improvement, the doctor added.

“When I arrived in India, I was unconscious and uncertain of my future. But the team at Care Hospitals gave me a new life,” the patient said.
