Phule’s 199th birth anniversary observed in Kurnool

District Collector P. Ranjith Basha on Friday (April 11) observed that Mahatma Jyotirao Phule remains a beacon of social reforms and continues to inspire many generations towards the uplift of backward classes.

He was speaking at the 199th birth anniversary celebrations of Phule at Birla Gate here. Kurnool MP B. Nagaraju, MLA Gouru Charitha and leaders of the SC/ST and BC communities took part in the meeting amidst floral tributes to Phule.

The Collector highlighted Phule’s pioneering contributions in eradicating caste discrimination and women’s education and empowerment. “Phule’s establishment of Satyashodhak Samaj fostered social awareness and fought oppressive practices against women,” he said, adding that steps would be taken to install a statue of Savitribai Phule beside Jyotiba Phule in Kurnool.

Mr. Nagaraju underlined the exemplary role of Phule as a mentor to Baba Saheb Ambedkar and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the marginalised sections, through budget allocations initiating empowerment schemes.

MLA Gouru Charitha recalled Phule’s fight against untouchability and child marriage. “His revolutionary work in promoting women’s education will be remembered by generations to come,” she said.
