Rains pound Nizamabad, Kamareddy; Orange alert on

NIZAMABAD: Rains battered the Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts on Thursday, compelling the Meteorological Department to issue an Orange Alert for north Telangana areas. Cloud cover dominated the skies over both districts, causing heavy downpours and gusty winds that left rural communities grappling with significant disruptions.

In Kamareddy district, mandals including Banswada, Birkur, Nasrullabad, Pitlam, Bichkunda, and Jukkal experienced intense bouts of rain that not only disrupted the daily life of residents but also damaged drying paddy crops spread across open fields. Farmers have expressed concerns about the increased moisture content in their harvested paddy, fearing this may compromise its quality. In some regions, hailstorms were reported, inflicting damage on crops and further burdening the agrarian community, while uprooted electrical poles disrupted power supplies across multiple areas.

Residents in Nizamabad city were also affected by the inclement weather. Frequent power cuts and low voltage issues left several colonies struggling to manage basic daily activities, although the Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) managed to restore power later on Thursday night.

Nizamabad district agriculture officer Wajid Hussain addressed the situation in an interview with Deccan Chronicle. Hussain assured that the sudden downpour would not have a detrimental impact on the district’s crops, noting that no hailstorms were observed there. However, the abrupt weather change has resulted in a delay in harvest activities, with work expected to resume in about three days. He added that while the rain might not offer immediate benefits to the farming community, it also does not translate to significant losses, though it has led to adjustments in the harvest schedule in several areas.

Amidst the challenges, residents of urban centres in Nizamabad, Armoor, Bodhan, Kamareddy, Banswada, and Bheemgal found some relief in the rain. The weather, which brought a welcome respite from the recent heat, registered a maximum temperature of 41.9 degrees Celsius at Kollur in Banswada mandal on Thursday, as clouds and showers moderated the temperature in the region.
