Government junior college students shine in intermediate exams in Andhra Pradesh

Vijayawada: Government junior colleges (GJCs) in the state delivered a stunning performance in the 2025 intermediate examinations, rivalling private institutions and recording the highest pass percentage in a decade. Key reforms initiated by the state govt helped GJCs improve their pass percentage significantly.
HRD & IT minister Nara Lokesh gave top priority to the transformation of GJCs, with performance in both general and vocational streams witnessing record-breaking success. In intermediate second year, 69% of govt college students passed, which is the highest in the last 10 years. The pass percentage of second-year students in 2024 was just 58%, while it was 85% in case of private and unaided colleges.
First-year students recorded a 47% pass rate, the second-highest in a decade. The pass percentage of first-year students of govt junior colleges in 2024 was just 38%, while it was 74% for private and unaided colleges.
GJCs in Parvathipuram Manyam district stood first in both first and second-year results, with 81% of second-year and 70% of first-year students clearing the exams.
Reacting to the results, Lokesh said the reintroduction of free textbooks and notebooks under the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mitra scheme and introduction of centralized assessments from Oct 2024 helped in improving the performance of students. He also mentioned the implementation of Dokka Seethamma midday meal scheme for intermediate students. The launch of a 100-day academic support program for weak students, along with tailored study materials, also helped students overcome exam fear and perform better, he said.
