Doctors in a Hyderabad hospital have successfully treated a 26-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed with placenta percreta, a rare and life-threatening complication during pregnancy.

Placenta percreta is a form of abnormal placental attachment where the placenta penetrates through the uterus and invades nearby organs such as the bladder or bowel. The condition, typically diagnosed late in pregnancy, can lead to bleeding during delivery and poses serious risks to both the mother and child.

In this case, the woman had no symptoms and was diagnosed during a routine scan between the 30th and 32nd week of her pregnancy. “The scans revealed that the placenta had extended beyond the uterus and was firmly attached to the bladder,” said Dr. Himabindu, Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon of Birthright.

“The entire operation lasted around six hours. There was no damage to the bladder or surrounding organs, and the total blood loss was only 500 ml, equivalent to a routine C-section. No transfusions were required, which is extremely rare in such cases. Both mother and baby are now stable and recovering well,” the doctor said.
