Police Scramble as Murders Rise over Minor Issues

Hyderabad: A sudden surge in murders across the tri-commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda over the past week has left police scrambling to restore public confidence. In just six days, seven persons, including two women, have been murdered, while three others were critically injured in separate incidents.

According to police officials, these murders were not the result of long-standing enmity or grave matters, but took place over petty matters that could have been easily resolved.

“In most murders, we have observed that there was almost no motive. The accused lost his temper following a heated argument and decided to eliminate the provocator,” an officer said, adding that the offender had taken the decision within a fraction of a second.

Police have also noted that weapons used for murder include iron rods, kitchen knives, screwdrivers, boulders, crowbars, axes and even a chunni. “The accused had used whatever they could lay their hands on. When they were arrested, the accused repent for their action,” the officer said.

Police have expedited investigations to bring the accused to justice and stepped up patrolling in the affected areas.

Jakati Madan Rao, 59, stabbed his sister Jakati Lakshmi, 68, seven times and attacked his elder brother Jakati Surarshan Rao, 70, with a kitchen knife when they tried to stop him from harassing their elderly mother Jakati Anusuiya for her pension. The incident occurred on April 9 in Old Malakpet.

“The issue could have been resolved easily, either by requesting or through some other way, but Madan chose to murder his own sister,” said Chaderghat station house officer R. Raju.

In a separate incident the same day, Oditha Lakshmi, 38, was stabbed by unidentified persons at the LB Nagar crossroads. The assailants have reportedly been arrested, and personal disputes were the motive, LB Nagar police said.

On April 8, gym trainer A. Sai Kishore, 34, was attacked with dumbbells by Chanti and two others in a gym at Boduppal. Sai succumbed to injuries the same day at a private hospital. According to the Medipally police, personal enmity is believed to be the motive.

On April 6, three murders were reported from different police stations, which had minor provocations.

Md Imtiyaz and others attacked their friend Akash Singh (29), an autorickshaw driver, with a cement brick at Malkajgiri and the victim succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The reason for the attack was said to be financial disputes.

Mohammed Mukheed, 32, with a record of bike thefts, was murdered by his brother-in-law Mohammed Sameer on Qutub Shahi Tomb Road in Golconda. Mukheed had given a stolen bike to Sameer and had been insisting on sharing the proceeds.

In Musheerabad, the body of a private company employee, Satnam Singh Bhatia, 58, was recovered from a water sump at his friend Chandriah Naik’s house on April 6. Singh had been missing from his house in Indiranagar, Alwal, since April 4 and his family had lodged a missing complaint. The motive was a property dispute.

On April 5, Pulluri Praneeth, 21, a driver, succumbed to injuries after he was attacked by Goverdhan, Vincint, and others near Yapral crossroads. The attack followed his refusal to consume ganja. Praneeth, who suffered internal injuries, died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital the next day, according to Jawaharnagar police.

Three incidents of attempted murder were reported on April 7. In one, a 35-year-old driver was attacked by unknown assailants in Jillelaguda, Meerpet, late at night. The same day, two persons, including an advocate, were brutally stabbed.

A 29-year-old advocate, Mohammed Mujtaba Ali, was stabbed him 16 times in the back by his cousin Bilal Tousif when he was on his way to have tea near the Padmaraonagar Park. When Mujtaba fell to the ground, Tousif continued attacking him with a knuckle duster.

In a separate incident, a 19-year-old man, Mohammed Rehan, was attacked by his friend Md Hussain at Yousufain Dargah. Hussain reportedly attacked Rehan on the face after he refused to fetch ganja for him, Humayunnagar police said.
