Villagers of Reddypalli on Sunday bid a tearful farewell to Daripalli Ramaiah, the veteran eco-warrior, fondly called ‘Vanajeevi Ramaiah’, who died following a heart attack in Khammam on Saturday.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Khammam MP Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy were among scores of people from and near who paid their last respects to the mortal remains of the departed green crusader at the funeral held in Reddypalli village.
A sapling was planted at the funeral site as a mark of respect to the departed green warrior, sources said.
The Minister consoled a grieving Janamma, wife of Ramaiah, and other members of the bereaved family. Khammam Police Commissioner Sunil Dutt, Additional Collector P Srinivas Reddy and officials of various government departments among others were present.
The Minister called the departed green crusader an inspiring figure and said, “Vanajeevi Ramaiah spearheaded his tree planting drive tirelessly surmounting all odds and financial difficulties during his lifetime. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2017 in recognition of decades of dedicated efforts to enhance green cover and spread environmental awareness.”
