Hyderabad: A 12-month-old toddler, a resident of Lalaguda, Hyderabad, has triumphed over cancer and recovered swiftly from cancer following a complex surgery at KIMS, Secunderabad.

The boy was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Neuroblastoma, a cancer that originates in nerve tissue and typically affects children under the age of five. In most cases, Neuroblastoma begins in the adrenal glands (above the kidneys) but can also start in the nerve tissues of the neck, chest, or pelvis.

In the boy’s case, the tumor was involving the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC), a major vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the heart and was also encasing his right kidney, making surgery complex.

“Chemotherapy did not yield desired result and surgery was inevitable. We were concerned about the kidney but managed to remove the tumor safely without affecting the kidney. We resected the IVC and then reconstructed it. The boy has recovered swiftly,” Dr. Madhu Devarasetty, senior surgical oncologist, who successfully performed the complex surgery and saved the child’s life, said.
