A leopard that has made the campus of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), on Hyderabad outskirts, its home, was successfully trapped by the Telangana Forest Department on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) night.

The Forest department officials confirmed the news and informed that the big cat was a healthy male around five-six years old.

One more leopard is suspected to be still roaming the campus. The two felines were captured on ICRISAT’s drone images recently, after a few sightings by the field workers.

The Sangareddy District Forest Officer Sridhar Rao informed that following the camera trap image of the leopard, two trap cages were set up inside the campus on Wednesday to rescue the cat.

This is not the first time leopards have been rescued from the sprawling campus of ICRISAT teeming with small prey. Twice in 2014 and 2019, the big cats were reported and caught after much effort.

In the present instance, the animals may have strayed into the campus long ago, during sub-adult stage, from the rocky terrain close by, Mr. Sridhar Rao surmised.
