Telangana’s Minister for Health C. Damodar Raja Narasimha has directed officials to take strict action against private hospitals performing unwanted Caesarean section deliveries. Highlighting the need to curb unnecessary C-sections, the Minister called for stricter audits and a renewed push to promote normal deliveries.
At a review meeting held on Thursday, the Minister said that awareness about the benefits of natural childbirth and the risks associated with Cesarean procedures must be shared with pregnant women and their families from the early stages of antenatal care. To boost the number of normal deliveries, he also proposed midwifery training for nurses working in government health facilities.
The Minister stressed the need to enhance infrastructure at maternal and child healthcare centres and urged officials to create conditions that encourage women to opt for delivery at government hospitals.
The minister also inquired into the ongoing recruitment process in government hospitals. Officials informed him that over 8,000 posts were filled last year and the process to fill more than 6,200 additional posts is currently underway.
